Jake: Hey, I’m Jake of Body by Jake with your health and wellness tip of the day. And that means it’s Art Mollen. Dr. Art Mollen is in the house! Is weight training better than aerobic exercise?
Dr. Art: You know, I think that both are so necessary and I think if you choose one over the other, you’re missing the boat.
You know aerobic exercise is extremely important because it’s going to give you a cardiovascular endurance. It’s going to give you overall strength. You’re probably going to sleep a little bit better. You’re going to have more ability to basically walk up a flight of stairs, you know, so I think aerobic exercise is extremely important.
On the other side of the coin, the weight training is equally as important because, especially as you get older, you lose a lot of strength. And I have 80 year old patients, you know, and I’ll have them lifting soup cans just to build up their arms and because that is really important for people as they get older, so they can pick up a bag of groceries and actually carry it into their house.
So I think the weight training is really important for people and you know, regardless of where they’re at in life, you know.
Jake:You know, you’re saying is that aerobic exercise is great nd weight training…
Dr. Art: …is great as well, I think. I think it’s a combination of both. I think both are equally as important. I think for people who are just starting in a program, aerobic exercise. Simply walk say, a mile a day. Do that every day for 30 days. It’s what I call the “minimal addictive dose of exercise.”
Jake: I love that.
The minimal addictive dose of exercise is one mile a day…
Dr. Art: You know, if you stopped after doing it you’ll be addicted and you could experience depression, anxiety, irritability and fatigue. Same as you would if you were addicted to a drug. So the aerobic exercise important. And for other people the weight training is equally as important and you can get addicted to that as well, you know. I know people love to exercise and do weights on a regular basis, and they get that same euphoric feeling.
Jake: You’re awesome man. Always awesome!
