Jake: Hey, I’m Jake of Body by Jake with your nutrition tip of the day. Of course, I’m sitting right next to the very famous Dr. P. Dr. P., what do you say buddy? Who is answering all of your questions, How do I navigate my shopping list when I go to the supermarket?
Dr. P.: Never go shopping hungry. Eat before you go because you start looking around going “Wow, that looks pretty good. I like that. I’ll get that.“ So eat before you go, don’t go in with cravings to a grocery store, as you go shopping.
Two, write out your shopping list. Don’t go in without that list. Write your foods down, write down what you need. Because if you go in, you won’t navigate correctly, you’ll start bumping into things and picking foods out.
Before you know it you’ll leave thinking what did I just do? I’ve got so much stuff I don’t need!” So write it out. Take your shopping list in with you. Navigate the outside portion of the store first and slowly work your way in.
The majority of your groceries should be purchased on the outside perimeter – like your fruits, your vegetables, meats. Handle that first. Your starches like your potatoes, rice and yams. And then slowly work your way in and really manage those multi-ingredient foods carefully like the bread, breads and muffins, and bagels.
Careful, careful, careful – they’re inflammatory. So they will inflame you. They adversely affect your gut, usually they are high-gluten, so watch those multi-ingredient guys. Stay on the outside perimeter, write down your shopping list before you go, and don’t go hungry.
Jake: And if you go into that, middle part of a supermarket. Is there something that you would recommend?
Dr. P.: Be specific? Like if you want an energy source bar, you know and you got your bars, you know, go find your snack bars, but get out of there quick.
Jake: Dr. P., the best as always. Right to the point!
